Violence in Baghdad After Muqtada al-Sadr Resigns from Politics

At least five people were killed and another 40 were wounded inside of the Baghdad Green Zone today after violent clashes erupted following the resignation of powerful Iraqi Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Heavy weapon systems were recorded being used in the Baghdad Green Zone tonight after the announcement by Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Muqtada al-Sadr is a prominent politician and religious cleric who two months ago said he would be removing himself from political affairs. The recent violence stemmed from the cleric announcing his official retirement.

Iraq's President, President Barham Salih, is urging citizens of Iraq to remain calm. In an official statement made by the President of Iraq Monday night, he said “the difficult circumstance that our country is going through requires everyone to abide by calm, restraint, prevent escalation, and ensure that the situation does not slip into unknown and dangerous labyrinths in which everyone will lose.”

We will continue to monitor the situation in Baghdad and post updates as they become available. To anyone looking for more up-to-the-minute coverage, I highly recommend checking out Snapchat's Map of Baghdad and other parts of Iraq where Iraqi civilians are posting their own minute-by-minute coverage of the situation on the ground.
