Video: 17 Injured After LAPD Detonates Confiscated Fireworks

A catastrophic failure of a mobile detonation chamber occurred when the LAPD attempted a controlled detonation of confiscated illegal fireworks, and the blast resulted in the injury of 17 people, 10 of which were police officers.

The LAPD received a tip of an illegal fireworks cache and promptly raided the home. The pyrotechnic devices were described as 40 soda can sized units, and approximately 200 smaller devices of similar construction.

The officers called in a truck hauling a steel blast containment chamber with the intention of safely detonating the devices in the neighborhood. However, the officers grossly underestimated the amount of explosive material they were about to reduce. The blast absolutely destroyed the truck, overturned a nearby car, and broke several windows of nearby houses. The blast itself was captured on video by news agency SKY5's helicopter unit.
