This short clip depicts a pair of Ukrainian Mi-17 (NATO Designator: HIP) helicopters delivering a rocket payload in the Zaporozhye region. While this is not particularly novel, as Mi-17s on both sides of the conflict typically work in pairs using this "pitch-up" delivery technique, what is worthy of note is that one of these Hips was originally an American purchase intended for the Afghanistan military. A fleet of sixteen Mi-17s was repurposed for Ukraine in Spring of last year.
An improved version of the Mi-8, also designated Hip, the Mi-17 represents an economical attack and transport aircraft, which, like the Afghan military, the Ukrainians already utilize. Therefore, to cut down on training and maintenance costs, the US-purchased Hips were an ideal donation to Ukraine.
