A video reportedly showing a 2011 US Army 3rd Special Forces Group night raid in Afghanistan gives the viewer a feel for what goes on during air assault missions.
The Green Berets' job description is basically "herding cats." They train indigenous forces to carry out combat missions and then join them on the raids as command and control. Although the special forces guys get their "pick of the litter," those that have worked with Afghan forces know that usually doesn't mean a whole lot. These guys have their hands full, and given the circumstances, they do an awesome job.
