This quick clip shows a Ukrainian Mig-29 (squadron not disclosed) as it climbs and rolls to deploy French-supplied AASM-250 “Hammer” glide bombs onto Russian positions. The jet then banks away and descends along the same angle in an impressive aerobatic display.
The AASM-250 is commonly referred to in English parlance as HAMMER (here standing for ‘Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range’). Although the 250-kg system is fitted with stabilizers and a rocket booster for initial flight, a Hammer bomb glides un-powered toward its target, guided by GPS. This essentially means that ici, nous avons un JDAM en Francais.
The Hammers are a relatively new resource for Ukrainian strike packages, having been supplied by France since early 2024. French President Macron pledged that the weapons would be sent to Ukraine over several months, at a rate of 50 per month. The first use of the Hammer in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict occurred in March 2024.
