Another submission from Ukraine’s 47th Mechanized Brigade, this drone footage shows two Ukrainian Army Mi-24 “Hind” attack helicopters as they fire salvos of rockets at a Russian position near Pokrovsky. This occurred in June of 2024.
The pair attacks in a pattern that is indicative of rotary-wing rocket attacks in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. They pitch their noses up to increase the range of their salvos, then pop countermeasures as they descend while banking away in order to defeat and elude anti-aircraft fire. This doctrine is followed by helicopter pilots on both sides, Russian and Ukrainian.
The efficacy of the pitch-up firing technique is a subject of continued debate, but it’s worth mentioning that neither side uses “dumb” rockets exclusively. Rockets with some targeting ability naturally benefit from the increased range, which is afforded by being “lobbed in.” Even in dumb-fire cases, the rapid arrival of a helicopter-delivered salvo is great for keeping heads down at a moment’s notice. If nothing else, the display, much like the Ukrainian countryside, is gorgeous to see.
