This footage, provided by the Ukrainian Military, shows a short-range missile defense system being used by the 1129th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment to fend off Russian drones. It offers a juxtaposed view of the launch from inside and outside the vehicle.

Originally referred to in Russian as the 9K33 Osa (Wasp), in Ukrainian service, this short range missile defender goes by the NATO nomenclature of SA-8 Gecko. Despite being 1970s Soviet tech, the Gecko remains a valuable anti-drone/missile asset that can independently detect, track and engage targets while boasting a travel range of 500 km and amphibious capability. It’s also air-transportable, meaning one of these can be set up pretty much anywhere someone starts throwing stones from on-high.

Depending on the missile used, the Gecko can engage targets between 1 and 15 kilometers away, and at altitudes of up to 12,000 meters.

Russia has lost about 15 of these units since the outset of the conflict, including four that were captured by Ukrainian forces, but has not been disclosed whether this is one of the four.
