Ukrainian Drone Buzzes Low Over Proxy Trenches, Records Russian Mine Launchers

Ukrainian forces buzzed Russian proxy trench positions at extremely low altitudes with a small recreational helicopter drone and identified Russian POM-2 landmine launchers and new trench positions not previously known to the Ukrainian units.

Flying the drone low over enemy positions actually poses less risk to the unmanned aircraft. By the time the device is detected by the enemy, it has already buzzed out of sight. Drones observing from high overhead can be engaged by ground units as they remain in view for longer periods of time.

POM-2 mines have been used with increasing frequency by the Russians in ongoing conflicts. POM-2 anti personnel mines are delivered into position by various weapons systems. In this video, we see an actual launcher rack specifically designed for emplacing the devices. However, the POM-2 can also be launched into position over greater ranges with modified RPG-7 warheads and 82mm mortar rounds. Given the current ranged trench stalemate in Ukraine, being able to launch landmines from friendly positions to behind enemy lines makes the POM-2 a practical choice. However, the fire-and-forget application of these mines will make them an indiscriminate danger for decades to come.
