A Ukrainian T-64B main battle tank fires at unseen targets while backing away from a threat. The tank commander’s point defense weapon chatters while the gunner takes a few shots with the 125mm cannon. According to the source the action occurs in the Serebryansʹkyy Forrest, a nature preserve approximately fifteen kilometers southwest of Kreminna. The tank is not backing up very quickly, and while the trees are likely a contributing factor, both the T-64 and T-72 are known for slow reverse speeds and a sensitive gear box. The ability to back out of a fighting position and to maneuver quickly while keeping the frontal armor oriented towards the enemy is crucial, and while the T-64 has a maximum reverse speed of 15 kph, western tanks like the Leopard 2 and the Abrams can reverse twice as fast.
