Shortly after 7 a.m. May 16, Chicago police officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert at the 1400 block of South Lawndale Avenue.
Upon arriving in the area, officers came across a man later identified as 45-year-old Bruce Lua, who they followed at a distance for several blocks. The officers repeatedly shouted verbal commands toward Lua to stop and take his hands out of his pockets.
The footage provided shows only a short segment of the encounter, but provides us with a first person perspective of when the suspect shoots and wounds two police officers. In one last attempt, one officer yells "Get your hands out of your pocket" with his firearm drawn.
As Lua continues to walk toward the officers, he asks "Why?". Seconds later he pulls a gun from his pocket and shoots the officer point blank. Multiple officers then returned fire, subduing Lua from causing any further harm.
The 26-year-old officer was struck in the hand, and the 28-year-old officer was hit in the hip and shoulder. During the time of the incident, Lua was a convicted felon awaiting trial for a pending misdemeanor assault case. Two days after the shooting, Lua was held on $10 million bail for the aggravated battery and attempted murder of two police officers.
