Freshly released footage from what is allegedly the counter-offensive on Kherson shows a Ukrainian tank shelling Russian defensive positions with fixed-wing air support overhead.
One thing we haven't seen too much of in the months since March of 2022 is Ukrainian air support working over Russian controlled territory. For the most part, both fixed and rotary wing air support from both the Russian and Ukrainian perspective has been limited to operations over friendly ground forces. We know that this is because of the extreme threat of anti-aircraft weapon systems in the Ukrainian battlespace. That said, over the past 48 hours we have seen a sharp increase in Ukrainian air support operating over and inside of Russian controlled territory in the Kherson Region.
This video was released recently to Twitter. It allegedly shows a Ukrainian tank operating near the village of Sukhoi Stavka. According to the video's source, the tank is shelling a Russian defensive line with support from Ukrainian fixed-wing aircraft. In the first few seconds of the video we can see what is believed to be a Ukrainian aircraft flying directly into Russian controlled territory, which is something we normally don't see either the Ukrainian or Russian air combat power doing due to the immense threat of being shot down by ground-based anti-aircraft weapon systems.
