An undetonated WWII Tallboy "Earthquake Bomb" was recently discovered in a canal in Poland, and the Polish Navy attempted to neutralize it by deflagration, which burns the munition rather than detonating it. The process failed and a spectacular underwater explosion occurred.
It is believed that the bomb was dropped by the British during a mission intended to destroy the German ship Lützow in the port city of Swinoujscie. Approximately 750 residents living in close proximity to the canal were evacuated from the area before the munition was reduced.
