Suspect Draws Gun Against K-9 And Officers, Provoking Deadly Shooting

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is now investigating a fatal shooting this evening (February 9, 2022) involving officers with the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD).

None of the DBPD officers involved were hurt, but a man wanted on an open warrant succumbed to his injuries shortly after he was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds following tonight’s incident at the intersection of U.S. 1/Ridgewood Avenue and Beville Road, which sits near the city borders of Daytona Beach and South Daytona.

Around 8:00 p.m., several DBPD officers were monitoring that man – who was wanted in connection to a shooting in the Fairway Estates neighborhood earlier this month – when he walked out of a residence and into the passenger seat of a white 4-door sedan.

Officers followed the vehicle as it left the home and performed a traffic stop near the U.S. 1/Beville intersection in order to take him into custody, boxing the vehicle in so that it could not leave and sending in a K-9 unit when he refused to leave the vehicle peacefully.

As the K-9 attempted to pull him out of the vehicle, the man appeared to reach for a firearm located inside the car, leading to the officers opening fire. A total of 4 officers were involved in this incident. Per department policy, they will be placed on paid administrative leave.

DBPD will not identify the officers involved at this time since FDLE’s investigation is active and ongoing. The man was later identified as 36-year-old Randy Lansang.
