A Ukrainian soldier fires a Stinger surface to air missile (SAM) at a low flying aircraft. With so much attention focused on drones of late, the conventional air war has been overlooked. The saturation of air defense assets within the battlespace has taken a toll on aircraft and forced air forces on both sides to adjust tactics. Close air support sorties are short and pilots fly nap of the earth, dump their ordnance, and depart as quickly as they can. Unless they fall prey to an opportunistic infantryman with a SAM.
