Secretary of Defense Mark Esper announced on Monday that an American woman was rescued during a daring military raid in Honduras.
Esper intentionally revealed very little details about the mission, but here is what we know:
1. A young American woman was the “victim of a violent crime” in the Central American nation.
2. She has been returned to the United States
3. President Trump credited Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley for “Taking care of it.” Trump also said, “We went in and we got her out, but that was rough stuff.”
Honduras had recently closed its borders due to the Covid-19 pandemic. US Southern Command was there retrieving a stranded American women’s tackle football team, and likely simultaneously carried out the rescue raid.
One could also speculate that the raid was carried out, or at least partly facilitated by a private security corporation known as Global Guardian, which is comprised of former special operations veterans. Global Guardian had just rescued 144 Americans and Canadians who were stranded on the Honduras island Roatan.
The following video by Staff Sgt. Lance Valencia of Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs shows the US women’s football team safely arriving in the States.
