On May 29, 2021, Placentia Police Department received a phone call for a suspicious vehicle parked in a shopping center parking lot. A Placentia police officer arrived on the scene in the area of 800 N. Rose Dr. and approached the vehicle.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the suspect who was later identified as 33-year-old Matthew Wong, was in the driver seat of the silver colored coupe. The officer asked Wong multiple times to lower the window and open the door. Wong then attempted to move his vehicle in reverse, but was blocked by an additional responding police cruiser.
After roughly ten minutes from the initial encounter, two additional police units arrived on the scene to assist the initial responding officer. Wong continued to disobey orders for three additional minutes, before officers began firing non-lethal 40mm rounds into the driver side window.
Twenty minutes after the initial encounter, officers fired their third non-lethal 40mm round into the driver side of Wong's car. Seconds after impact, Wong retrieved a firearm and began shooting through the drivers side window, further causing an officer involved shooting. Multiple officers began returning fire, striking the Wong multiple times with their handguns and an AR-15.
Wong was treated on the scene for his gun inflicted injuries until medical transport arrived, but was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
