Gopro footage released by members of the Shkval Penal Battalion with the 28th Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine shows two Ukrainian troops attacking a Russian occupied trench system near Toretsk. The group, guided by Ukrainian drone operators from the 28th Mechanized Brigade, clears through the system using small arms fire and hand grenades, killing two Russians and capturing at least two more. The Shkval Penal Battalion is exactly what it sounds like. They are a group of conscripted prisoners who had their unit formed after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky passed a new law allowing for prisoners to be mobilized for military service on a volunteer basis in exchange for a reduction in their prison sentence. Members are paid between $500 and $4000 U.S. per month depending on their time spent on the front-lines and are conscripted until the conclusion of the Russo-Ukraine war once they volunteer.
