San Diego SWAT snipers shot and killed an armed fugitive following a car chase and an 11-hour standoff on April 13, 2021.
According to reports, 36-year-old Christopher Templo Marquez was wanted on suspicion of shooting and injuring a private investigator in March and also exchanging gunfire with police officers in early April.
Following the pursuit, Marquez took up refuge in a set of dumpsters near a high school while armed with a pistol and a rifle and holding his terrified girlfriend hostage. At one point the gunman traded his handgun to negotiators for a bottle of water.
As the standoff dragged on, Marquez became increasingly hostile toward his hostage and it appeared he was putting her into a position to be executed. The SWAT marksmen, sitting in an overwatch position, saw their opportunity and took the shot, killing Marquez. SWAT officers on the ground detonated several flashbang type distraction devices and moved into the scene, where they pulled the hostage to safety.
