A compelling video, reportedly filmed in Ukraine on Nov. 23, 2017 shows helmet cam footage from pro Ukrainian militiamen combined with Russian military aftermath footage of the same event.
Based on the footage, the Ukrainian troops were conducting a poorly-planned reconnaissance-sapper mission into Russian-held territory. While the soldiers have relatively new snow-camo uniforms, they do not appear to have any kind of communications equipment or plan for that matter.
They push through a trench, in daylight, toward the Russian perimeter, almost in a movement-to-contact type posture, rather than a stealthy recon type posture. Suddenly shooting breaks out, they are discovered, but they don't break contact. The cameraman contuse to advance and either trips an anti personnel mine or catches an enemy grenade. His buddies attempt to evacuate him, and although the footage doesn't show it, they are all either killed or captured by the Russian forces.
The video then switches to the Russian point of view. It shows the bodies of the Ukrainian infiltration team being searched and weapons taken. The video then takes a weird turn as the Russian ground commander begins answering incoming calls on one of the dead Ukrainian soldier's phones. One of the calls is from the slain soldier's mother. The officer matter-of-factly delivers the horrible news.
The video then cuts to one of the captured, wounded Ukrainian soldiers being medically treated by the Russians. This portion of the footage was a deliberate and awkward public-relations stunt by the Russians to demonstrate compassion.
