Russian paratroopers, along with soldiers from Belarus, Tajikistan, and Armenia have deployed troops to Kazakhstan following a violent revolt by the citizens in protest of doubled fuel prices and government corruption.
Russia announced the troops were deploying as peacekeepers, but it is unclear what their actual role will be, and further information leaving the nation is severely constricted as the Kazakh government declared a state of emergency and turned off internet access to the citizens.
Kazakh leadership is exonerating themselves of any responsibility and claiming the insurrection is an operation being carried out by foreign terrorist groups. Coincidentally, that Kazakh leadership; President Tokayev and former President Nazarbayev (who still holds significant power over the nation) have gotten filthy rich from Kazakhstan's wealth of oil and uranium exports while the people live in squalor.
Approximately 20 security forces have been killed and around an additional 750 have been injured. Dozens of protestors have reportedly been killed and 2,000 have been arrested. So far the Kazakh government has not released any evidence that any of the rioters arrested or killed were foreign terrorists.
Biden's Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stated that the US supports Kazakhstan's constitutional institutions and advocated for peace, but failed to condemn Kazakh troops opening fire on protestors.
