Footage reportedly shows Ukrainian troops firing a Polish-made Piorun MANPADS missile and successfully downing a Russian Orlan-10 drone.
Exhausting a SAM on an unmanned observation drone may seem like a waste to some, but it is absolutely not. Drone provide incredibly priceless realtime information including enemy troop movements, compositions, and exact locations. Drones of any kind are a welcome target regardless of the price difference between the missile and UAV.
The Piorun, or "thunderbolt" is a Polish shoulder-fired surface to air missile designed to down low-flying aircraft including planes, helicopters, and drones. The Piorun is said to be 30% more effective at hitting and killing its target compared to the Stinger and Igla. The Ukrainians likely received the weapon system relatively recently as a result of Russian aggression.
