On March 10, 2021 officers from the Rochester Police Department responded to the Open Door Mission after dispatch received a call stating a man took a large knife from the Mission kitchen and left the building.
According to police, shortly after arriving on the scene and locating the suspect, they called for an officer with a Taser or beanbag gun right before the man began cutting himself and threatening to kill the officers.
Before the officers could conduct a non-lethal approach to de-escalate the situation, the suspect charged at officers, provoking an officer involved shooting. Unfortunately this seems to have been a "suicide by police officer" scenario which has recently become more common. It could seem more common with the implementation of body-worn cameras, but the story behind it seems to lean this way. The suspect in the case identity has not been released and an ongoing investigation is still underway.
