Officer Shoots to Save Partner After Pistol is Stolen

Body worn camera footage released by the Kansas City Police Department captures the harrowing moment where an officer is forced to engage a suspect who stole his partner's pistol.


On November 22nd, 2021, the Kansas City Police Department responded to a 911 call about a distraught man standing in the middle of the road and trying to jump in front of traffic. The second responding officers arrive at the scene, 36-year-old Lionel Womack charges at them and attempt to get into the passenger side of the responding officer's police cruiser.


In the ensuing struggle, Womack managed to wrestle away the pistol of the officer on his side of the vehicle who was trying to get him out of the vehicle. Womack then proceeded to point the pistol at the officer on the ground and discharge two shots before he was subsequently shot himself by the second officer who was defending the life of his partner.


Womack was then transported to a nearby medical facility where he was pronounced dead two hours later. The two officers involved received non life-threatening injuries. Womack's wife and mother are both officers in the Kansas City Police Department, and his stepfather is also a retired police Sergeant. Both of his aunts are city police dispatchers. Womack himself was also a member of the Kansas City Police Department in 2007, where he was promoted to detective in 2018.
