On Tuesday, July 27, 2021 a high speed chase and officer involved shooting occurred with the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) Trooper was hit by a fleeing vehicle, and sent through the windshield.
At roughly 12 p.m., an NHP trooper was laying down a spike strip to assist officers from the Department of Parole and Probation, who were actively chasing a male subject who had just taken part in a suspected car-jacking. Upon placing the spike strip, the male suspect dodged them, swerving toward the trooper and hitting him, sending him straight through the windshield of the car.
After hitting the trooper, the footage captured by an eye-witness shows the moments NHP Troopers successfully pitted the vehicle. With the injured trooper inside the vehicle, reports have stated the male suspect attempted to recover the firearm from the troopers holster. As police surrounded the now disabled vehicle, numerous shots can be heard. The suspect was struck multiple times and was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
The NHP Trooper who was struck by the vehicle, 46-year-old Micah May is a thirteen-year veteran of the force. He was labeled in critical condition, as he was air-lifted to University Medical Center.
