Officer Engages Suspect Armed with a Knife Before Foot Chase

On December 19, 2021, officers from the Houston Police Department responded to an armed robbery call where the suspect had been locked inside of the building.

Upon arriving at the scene of the incident the first officer, a 10-year-veteran of the HPD attempts to make contact with the suspect. The suspect does not immediately comply with the officer's commands to get on the ground until a second officer arrives to provide less-lethal support to the first officer. Shortly after his arrival, the second officer makes the decision to use less-lethal force in the form of a Taser to try and bring the suspect to compliance. The system fails.

Immediately following the Taser deployment, the man backs into the store, and then charges through the officers. Seeing that the suspect was armed with a knife, the first officer who was holding lethal-force as an option discharges her service pistol once, but misses the target allowing him to get out of the market he had just robbed.

A brief foot pursuit occurs, which ends when a third patrol officer arrives and is able to detain the man.

No one was injured during this encounter.
