Body camera footage released by the New York Police Department, shows to moments two officers were wounded after engaging in an extremely dangerous close-quarters gunfight with an armed suspect.
On November 24th, 2021, at approximately 8 p.m., dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from an apartment tenant stating a young Hispanic man was armed with a gun outside of his apartment located on 2405 Beaumont Avenue. As shown in the surveillance and body camera footage, as officers approached the man sitting on the steps to the apartment, he immediately stood up and forced a struggle with officers.
During the struggle, the suspect began discharging a firearm multiple times, striking both responding officers. In response, the female officer fired numerous shots, striking the suspect multiple times. The suspect was taken to the ground and placed in police custody. He was later identified as 23-year-old Charlie Vasquez. Mr. Vasquez sustained three gunshot wounds, one to his abdomen, chest, and armpit. Vasquez was transported to Saint Barnabus Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
Both wounded officers were also transported to Saint Barnabus Hospital to receive treatment for their gunshot wounds. Both are expected to make a full recovery.
Since the incident, Vasquez has been charged with two counts of the following: attempted murder 1st, attempted murder 2nd, attempted aggravated assault upon a police officer, attempted assault 1st, attempted assault 2nd, and one count of criminal use of a firearm 1st, criminal possession of a weapon 2nd, criminal possession of a firearm, and obstructing governmental administration 2nd.
