Tehreek-i-Taliban (TTP), commonly referred to as the Pakistan Taliban, released a video called "Lazer Operation," which primarily shows thermal sniper harassment operations against Pakistani troops. The accompanying footage is two combined segments from that video release and may not be from the same event.
The TTP's intent is to overthrow the Pakistan government and replace it with a theocracy based on Sharia Law. For years they have had limited success as US and Pakistan military operations kept them isolated in the Waziristan border tribal regions of Pakistan.
Since the ouster of the US military by the Afghan Taliban, the TTP have been able to operate out of cross-border safe havens in Afghanistan. Additionally, the plethora of abandoned equipment by US and Afghan forces has allowed the TTP to arm themselves with advanced weaponry, like the thermal optics seen in the video.
While the Afghan Taliban continue to fight against the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), the TTP is somewhat affiliated with both, as many of the ISKP members are former TTP and the ideology of the TTP closely mirrors that of the Afghan Taliban.
Pakistan, who has long-supported the Afghan Taliban in their fight against the US (with US funding) are now getting a taste of their own medicine as cross border attacks against their own forces are a cause for concern.
This may seem like a bit of justice to any US Afghan vet who fought in eastern Afghanistan, getting attacked from Pakistan daily and watching Pak Mil border checkpoints fly the Taliban flag, one has to keep in mind that Pakistan is a nuclear-armed country and further destabilization could have disastrous effects for the world, should a nuke fall into the hands of a third party.
