On May 18, 2021 deputies from the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office attempted to conduct a routine traffic stop near Torrid Avenue and North Carpenter Road in Modesto. As the responding cruiser began trailing the suspect vehicle, the suspects attempted to flee the area at a high rate of speed.
After a seven mile long high speed chase, the suspect, later identified as 16-year-old Xander Mann crashed his vehicle, striking a pole. One officer exited his cruiser where Mann then attempted to run him over.
Escalating the situation, the deputies fired multiple shots, striking Mann. The passenger who was not identified was not injured, however Mann was wounded multiple times. Deputies immediately began providing medical aid to Mann, but he later succumbed to his wounds. There is still an ongoing investigation to determine the motives behind the aggravated driving and officer involved shooting.
