The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office released new body camera and video surveillance footage from a November 26th, 2021, incident, showing the moments a deputy fatally wounded 18-year-old Elijah Riche, who at the time of the shooting, was armed with multiple weapons.
At approximately 2 p.m., deputies observed Riche crashing a red SUV into multiple cars parked at the intersection of Edith and Montaño. The patrolling deputy began pursuing Riche in a short vehicle chase before Riche lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a fence at the intersection of Edith and Nikanda. With his vehicle disabled, Riche exited the SUV, armed with what appeared to be an AR platform weapon.
Responding deputies commanded Riche to drop the weapon, however he did not comply. As Riche continued to run through an alleyway toward additional responding deputies, one deputy fired a single shot, striking Riche and neutralizing him. Deputies approached Riche with caution, removing the weapons and backpack filled with firearms from his person. Riche was provided on scene medical aid until medical transport arrived to transfer him to an area hospital. Riche did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
During initial investigations, deputies located four weapons in Riche's backpack, the AR platform weapon he was armed with, and an additional shotgun in the passenger side of his wrecked vehicle. No deputies or bystanders were injured during this incident.
