New body camera footage released by the Gunnison Police Department (GPD), shows a deadly officer involved shooting involving an auto-theft suspect that occurred on November 11th, 2021.
At approximately 11:05 p.m., GPD officers arrived in the area of 802 N. Colorado St, after a 9-1-1 caller identified a male sleeping inside a vehicle outside their apartment. During the conversation, authorities were provided a license plate number that matched a vehicle stolen from a different jurisdiction in Colorado.
As shown in the body camera footage, several officers commanded the man to exit the stolen vehicle; however he continued to be non-compliant. The suspect attempted to force the car through several parked police cruisers, which resulted in one officer being run over. In response to the aggressive driving, one officer opened fire to subdue the man. The man was struck by the officer gunfire and would later be pronounced deceased on the scene. The officer who was run over was transported to a nearby hospital and was later released from his minor injuries.
Since the closing of this investigation in April 2022, the officer who fired the shots was ruled in a justified use of force against the aggressive male suspect. The suspect was additionally identified as 44-year-old Gary Donald Cooper.
For viewer discretion, the footage was censored by the law enforcement agency, NOT the Funker530 team.
