On June 20th, 2021, officers from the Houston Police Department were dispatched to 1015 East Tri Oaks Lane, after a female subject contacted 9-1-1 stating her ex-boyfriend was threatening her life. During the dispatch call, the female subject can be heard, calmly communicating with dispatch, while simultaneously dismissing her aggressive ex-boyfriend, identified as 46-year-old Lewis Trinidad Nunez.
As the dispatch call continued, it abruptly ended, after Nunez began attacking the female subject. While arriving on scene, Officer Tran and Sergeant Jorsch observed a female subject (9-1-1 callers mother) approaching the front door of the apartment. While Sergeant Jorsch briefly spoke to a male subject (9-1-1 callers father) located outside the apartment, Nunez opened the front door, fired a single shot, and killed the mother knocking on the door.
In response, Officer Tran began commanding Nunez to drop the weapon; however Nunez began firing numerous shots toward the officer. Officer Tran returned fire, striking Nunez multiple times and neutralized him. Responding officers removed the firearm from Nunez and took him into police custody. Upon further investigation, prior to the officers arrival, Nunez had shot and killed his ex-girlfriend moments after the dispatch call ended.
Nunez was transported to the Ben Taub Hospital in Houston, where he received treatment for his gunshot wounds. Nunez survived his injuries and now faces two counts of capital murder and one more count for the attempted murder of a public servant.
No officers were injured during this incident.
