(NSFW) Suspect in Hatchet Attack Pulls Knife On Cops, Gets Shot

This combination of security camera and bodycam footage, provided by the Police Department in Kent, Washington State, shows a suspect appearing to attack an elderly man with a hatchet. When police catch up with him, he draws a large knife. The police shoot and kill him. Viewer discretion is advised.

The video begins with security footage of the hatchet attack, which occured at Town Square Park, in Kent. 30-year-old Paleti Veniale, in black, is shown following his victim- a 71-year-old man in grey, before drawing a hatchet at 0:36. He chases and strikes the man from behind at 0:54.

After two days of investigation, the Kent police located Veniale and attempted to question him. He fled on foot, which is where our bodycam footage kicks in. At 01:23, Veniale is shown mid-flight as the police chase him. As they cross the roadway, Veniale draws a large knife, visible in his right hand as the lead officer falls. This appears to be due to his deliberate attempt to stop, having seen Veniale's knife. However, falling to the ground places the officer in an incredibly compromised position. Fortunately, his partner (from whose perspective we are viewing) drills Veniale a total of seven times, downing him. Veniale drops the knife, and the lead officer kicks it away.

Incredibly, both the 71-year-old victim and Veniale both survived. The elderly gentleman is now in "satisfactory condition" after three months of recovery. Police and fire fighters performed immediate care on Veniale, who was transported to an area hospital. He is currently held in jail on a $1MIL bond for attempted murder.
