On May 9, 2023, members of the Illinois State Police Department stopped to assist a stranded motorist and are confronted with a man having a mental break. They attempt to subdue the suspect, but the Taser does not fully connect allowing the suspect to fight through it to his vehicle where he had a handgun stashed.
The suspect, 23-year-old Brandon Griffith, then engaged the two police officers at near point-blank range with the pistol, wounding a 17-year-veteran of the department. The second officer returned fire killing Griffith and stopping the threat.
