A critical incident involving the Bakersfield Police Department occurred on August 7th, 2021, after dispatch received a phone call from a security guard regarding an active shooter. At 0056 hours, BPD dispatch received the phone call, where the security guard explained the events that had occurred in a subdivision construction site northwest of Panama Lane and Buena Vista Road.
In addition, the security guard was able to identify the suspects vehicle as a green Chevy pickup truck. At 0232 hours, BPD officers received a report that the armed suspect was located at a families residence in the 4500 block of Blossom Valley. As BPD officers arrived in the 4500 block, the suspect had started fleeing the area in his truck, leading officers on a short vehicle chase. The truck soon became disabled south of Harris and Stine road, where the suspect and officers exchanged gunfire.
After the brief engagement, the suspect jumped a barrier and fled the area on foot, heading into residential backyards to avoid the pursuing officers. At 0256 hours, officers received another lead on the suspect that he had been holed up behind a residence located in the 5700 block of Autumn Crest Drive. Upon making contact with the suspect, a second officer involved shooting occurred. Three officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect and neutralizing him. Despite life saving aid, the suspect succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
Through the entire event, five officers discharged their service weapons during the two different engagements. Moments after the second engagement, the suspect reportedly discarded his weapon in a surrounding backyard.
