This footage, provided by the police in Ceres, California, shows their response to a domestic complaint concerning a someone suspected of brandishing a knife. During the course of their response, the officers discover that the suspect has an active arrest warrant. As the officers attempt to effect his arrest, the suspect charges an officer with a knife, stabbing her- at which point he is shot. Viewer discretion is advised.
The video begins with security camera footage of the suspect, Alexander Ortega, 22. He’s seen brandishing a kitchen knife. After a K9-assisted search (courtesy of Modesto PD), the officers locate Ortega at 02:03. Ortega is seen hiding in a red-and-white truck. Ortega feigns being unable to open the passenger door, at which point two of the three officers move to the driver’s side to extricate him.
This turns out to be a fairly clever ploy to separate the officers. Ortega opens the passenger door at 03:08, charging the remaining officer on the passenger side. Although the suspect is taken down by gunfire, he manages to stab the officer in the arm. At 03:43, we see this happen from the other officer’s perspective.
Backup arrives to complete the arrest and provide medical aid to the suspect and wounded officer. The officers use a ballistic shield to compress and restrict Ortega’s movements before securing him, at which point they provide CPR. However, this proves unsuccessful, as the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The officer who was knifed was transported to an area hospital, where her non-life-threatening injury was treated.
