On July 26, 2021, Los Angeles Police Officers were dispatched to an apartment building located at the 3700 block of Barry Avenue, for a reported "hot prowl burglary". For those unfamiliar with the term, the LAPD and many other law enforcement agencies refer to a "hot prowl burglary" as a burglary when a subject enters, or attempts to enter your home while someone is home. A hot prowl burglary is dangerous because of the possible confrontation between the subject and victim.
Police reports later stated, when officers arrived on the scene, they located a broken window on the front side of the apartment. Upon approaching the building, yelling and screaming was heard from inside the apartment. While police began investigating the scene, they spotted the suspect, who was later identified as 58-year-old Herman Gonzalez, holding an elderly woman at knife point with a large kitchen knife.
After giving Gonzalez numerous commands to drop the knife, he continued to ignore the officers, further causing an officer involved shooting. As seen in the footage, the officer discharged his service weapon a single time, hitting a precise shot on Gonzalez, fatally wounding him. When the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on the scene, life saving measures were attempted on Gonzales, however he was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers, nor the victim were injured during this incident.
