On April 28, 2021, at approximately 2:25 p.m., Van Nuys uniform officers responded to a radio call of "Shots Fired" at the 5200 block of Vesper Avenue in Van Nuys. The officers found an off-duty LAPD officer with gunshot wounds at the scene as well as a male Hispanic suspect, also suffering from gunshot wounds.
A preliminary investigation revealed the off-duty officer encountered the suspect inside the off-duty officer's garage. The suspect armed himself with a firearm, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting. The suspect and officer exchanged gunfire. The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Christopher Carmarena-Quintanilla and arrested at scene by responding officers and transported to a local hospital where he received medical treatment.
The off-duty officer also sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital. He received medical treatment and is expected to survive his injuries.
Camarena is facing attempted murder of a police officer, robbery, resisting an officer, and felon in possession of a firearm.
