A short segment from a news clip shows the moment an element of Mexican soldiers and provincial police are ambushed by cartel gunmen reportedly using a .50 sniper rifle.
The footage goes on to show the Mexican soldier laying across a tailgate with a severely damaged lower leg and a tourniquet on his upper thigh. It's not clear how they determined the wound was from a .50, as any centerfire rifle round would inflict significant damage should it strike bone.
Cartels have been in possession of Barrett .50 cal sniper rifles for over a decade, and their anti-material rifle arsenal continues to grow. Some of the rifles have been captured from Mexican military forces, while others have been bought in the US, smuggled south, and sold to the cartels at a significant markup.
