The Glendale Police Department released dashcam and body camera footage from an incident on November 3rd, 2021, showing the moments a man who was destroying cars with a hatchet led officers on a high-speed vehicle chase through a residential area, which ultimately resulted in an officer involved shooting.
Just after midnight, officers responded to a 9-1-1 caller, who observed a man 'beating the crap out of a car'. As shown in the dashcam and body camera footage, as patrolling officers arrived in the area of 62nd and Maryland Ave., the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Jose Enriquez Cortez, was leaving the scene when he intentionally slammed his vehicle into a police cruiser.
Several responding officers pursued Cortez, as he sped dangerously through a residential area. Only driving a few blocks, Cortez eventually stopped his vehicle just off the intersection of 62nd Ave. and Ocotillo Road, exited his car, and began making verbal threats toward officers. Two officers exited their vehicles, desperately trying to de-escalate Cortez's erratic behavior, however they were unsuccessful. As a result, one officer deployed a less lethal taser, which appears to have been ineffective.
Cortez continued ignoring all verbal commands and continued reaching into his waistband. During one last aggressive charge toward officers, one officer discharged multiple shots from his service weapon, striking Cortez and neutralizing him. Officers immediately began rendering life saving medical aid to Cortez until an ambulance arrived on scene. Cortez was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
