Man Refuses Frisk, Then Draws Handgun And Fires At Officers

A recent critical incident released by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) shows the moments two officers engaged in a close quartered gun fight with a suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Taveon Davidson.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., on November 16th, 2021, a 9-1-1 caller reported two suspicious men wandering through a mobile home park located on North Pecos Road, near Lake Mead Boulevard. LVMPD Officers Jeffrey Burr, a twelve-year veteran of the force, and Damario Simmons, a one-year veteran of the force, were the first responding officers in the area. Upon arriving at the mobile home park, Officer Burr located Davidson and attempted to make confrontation.

For officer Burr's safety, he requested Davidson to turn around so he could conduct a stop and frisk. Almost immediately after that request was made, Davidson began fleeing the area. As the foot chase ensued, officer Burr observed Davidson reaching for a firearm in his waistband. Officer Burr is heard numerous time commanding Davidson to stop reaching and to put the gun down.

In the slow-motion segment and still images, Davidson is observed drawing his firearm, pointing it at officer Burr, and discharging multiple rounds. In response to Davidson's non-compliant actions, officer Burr and officer Simmons discharged nearly two-dozen shots, striking Davidson multiple times. Later reports have stated, Davidson continued running through a yard at the mobile home park. Both officers pursued in a short foot chase, which ultimately ended after Davidson collapsed to the ground as he climbed over a chain-link fence.

Davidson was taken into custody and then transported to UMC Trauma where he was admitted for treatment of his wounds. He has since been charged with the following: two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon on a protected person, shooting into an occupied structure, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon.

No officers were injured during this incident.
