Footage captured by an Austin police officers dash cam and body worn camera, shows a critical incident involving a suicidal man, armed with a knife.
At approximately 4:35 p.m., officers from the Austin Police Department were dispatched to U.S. Highway 183, after a man was reportedly blocking traffic during rush hour. Officers arrived in the 2100 block of South U.S. HWY 183 northbound and Riverside Drive in east Austin, where they located the suspect still blocking traffic.
As indicated in the dashcam and body worn camera footage, responding officers exited the cruiser and began commanding the suspect to drop the knife. Refusing the officers commands, the suspect continued to walk toward the officers, further causing an officer involved shooting. While on the ground wounded, the suspect continued requesting the officers to kill him.
Still armed with the knife, officers continued to command the man to drop his knife, however he still refused. Officers then utilized a less lethal taser prong to subdue to suspect, while simultaneously kicking the knife out of his hand. The suspect was rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived on the scene. The man was transported to an area hospital in stable condition, where he was then treated for his wounds. The identity of the suspect, Lashondell Gillespie, was released after the initial investigation.
