Body worn camera footage released by the Salt Lake City Police Department shows the altercation and detention of 35-year-old Nykon Brandon, who would later die in police custody.

Body worn camera footage from August 14, 2022 shows law enforcement officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department responding to a 9-1-1 call from a local brewery about a man who attempted to steal alcohol in his underwear. After being arriving at the scene of the incident, officers involved attempted to make contact with the suspect, 35-year-old Nykon Brandon, who refused to comply with the officer's commands to stop.

Brandon then got into a physicals altercation with one of the officers, and attempted to take one of their service pistols before he was brought to the ground by a second officer's tackle. For several minutes, the officers struggle with Brandon until a third officer arrives, at which point a safety restraint device is used in combination with several holds to keep Brandon from harming himself or any of the involved officers.

At this point, the video cuts off as officers begin to provide Brandon with life-saving-aid, including the first of what was allegedly multiple doses of Narcan, a medication designed to reverse the effects of opioid overdose.

Brandon was then transported to a nearby medical facility where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death has not been released and the situation is being investigated by an outside agency, in compliance with the OICI protocol, and that the SLCPD Internal Affairs Unit will also be conducting a second investigation of this incident.

As a forward-thinking department, we will use those findings to evaluate our policies, training, and procedures to continue ensuring we are making our city safer," said Chief Mike Brown in a statement regarding SLCPD’s management of this incident.
