(NSFW) Lucky La Mesa Cop Saved By Burglar's Jammed Handgun

This critical incident report footage depicts officers attempting to interdict a suspected burglar, who aims a weapon at one of them. The suspect is killed by the ensuing gunfire, and therefore viewer discretion is advised.

Two officers approached 41 year old Jason Hampton on the grounds that he matched the description of a felony burglary suspect in the area. After a summary of the incident, we see the partner officer's footage begin at 0:46. The officer who will ultimately shoot and kill Hampton is seen walking ahead. As the lead officer makes contact from the front of the vehicle, his partner wisely circles around to approach the scene from behind. At 01:07, we see the lead officer duck as Hampton produces a handgun and tries to fire with an audible "click." The weapon is jammed. As Hampton flees, the lead officer fires at him. Although the backup officer pulls his weapon at 01:15, he does not fire. At 01:31, we see the downed Hampton by the side of the road. At the lead officer's insistence, his partner checks him for injuries but finds him unharmed.

The lead officer's bodycam footage starts at 02:18. He addresses Hampton by name, and although he denies the name, he draws a handgun at 02:36 and tries to pull the trigger several times. Fortunately for the officer, and not so much for the burglar, the weapon has malfunctioned. As Hampton flees, he continually tries to clear the malfunction. As this is clear evidence that he intends to get back in the fight, the lead officer opens fire. He fires at Hampton five times from 02:39- 02:42. He then chases Hampton down the parking lot before re-engaging with a further four rounds. Hampton drops at 02:50.

03:47 begins a portion of the video with the audio enhanced. With the volume increased, we can clearly hear the "click" of a malfunction. At 04:29, we can see the failure to eject which caused it.
