On July 22, 2022, officers from the Los Angeles Police Department followed a suspicious vehicle into a parking lot. When the driver exited, the officers saw that the man was armed with a gun and began a foot pursuit.
Patrol Officers from the LAPD Hollenbeck Division were involved in an officer involved shooting with 40-year-old Lino Soltero in the area of Eastern Avenue and Whiteside Street after a brief foot pursuit that ended with Soltero falling to his back. According to the LAPD, as Soltero fell to the ground, he turned to his back and aimed his pistol at one of the pursuing officers. The officer then opened fire multiple times until the threat stopped.
After back-up arrived to the scene, Hollenbeck Division officers moved to clear and secure Soltero before providing him with life-saving aid. They would later be relieved by paramedics who would then transport Soltero to a nearby medical facility. Soltero was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to the LAPD, Soltero's pistol had been discharged, however the incident is still under investigation.
