A deadly Belarusian KGB raid was filmed by both the government operatives and the now slain suspect on Sept. 28, 2021, as the Belarus government continues its crackdown against protesters and independent journalists.
The suspect, identified as Andrei Zeltser, 31, an IT specialist for the Pennsylvania-based EPAM Systems company filmed himself opening fire with an over-under shotgun against the KGP raid team. US authorities are trying to figure out if Zeltser himself may be an American citizen.
The footage shows one of the KGB operatives taking the brunt of the shotgun blast. He later dies. Reports indicate that Zeltser was killed seconds later in the raid. His wife was arrested.
Zeltser was likely affiliated with the pro-democracy opposition against the authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko who "won" a sixth term in the August 2020 sham election. The clearly fraudulent election was met with massive protests, and Lukashenko responded by arresting over 35,000 citizens and large scale beatdowns of protesters.
Belarus has blocked almost all but state-run news sites, and at least 27 journalists are currently imprisoned.
