On July 30, 2022, Officers from the Houston Police Department were dispatched to boarding home in west Houston where a man having a mental crisis was threatening people with a knife.
Upon arriving on the scene the suspect was found outside of the house in the street with a knife incoherently rambling. The suspect, 38-year-old Bryan Stuart Cornitius, then approached one of the officers with the blade in his hand. Responding officers gave Cornitius multiple commands to drop the knife. Cornitius refused to comply with any of the commands and instead erratically moved back and forth.
When the first officer moved to reposition himself next to the officer who's body worn camera is shown above, Cornitius made the decision to charge at the officer. As a result, the officer discharged his duty weapon to stop the threat Cornitius presented.
Immediately following the shooting Cornitius was cleared of weapons, handcuffed, and then provided with life-saving-aid. He was later transported to a nearby medical facility where he remains in custody. No officers were injured.
