A critical incident reported by the Greenville County Sheriffs Department, shows the moments Deputies attempted to arrest a suspect wanted for an attempted homicide, which occurred in late December 2020. During the confrontation, the suspect caused a physical struggle, where he then drew a firearm, further causing a deputy involved shooting.
On June 23, 2021, Deputies arrived at 85 Montague Road at around 5 p.m. Upon arriving, the suspect, whose identity was later released as 40-year-old Earl Fitzgerald Hunter, occupied the home. Being granted permission to enter the home, deputies were told Hunter was not in the home.
Within a short time of entering, one deputy begins shouting "hands! hands! get your hands out of your pocket". A split second later, Hunter retrieves a firearm from his pocket, which then caused the deputies to use lethal measures to neutralize Hunter. During this incident, two deputies fired multiple shots, striking Hunter and critically wounding him. Deputies secured the area and waited for EMS to arrive on the scene, where Hunter was later pronounced deceased.
During South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s investigation, they found Hunter’s loaded pistol under his hand. After an internal investigation, the deputies’ actions were cleared, as the deputies were forced to utilize deadly force for their own safety. Later detailed reports stated Hunter was wanted in Spartanburg for an attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
