Body camera footage from a July 2020 incident shows the moments Deputies from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office unload their service weapons into an armed fugitive.
On July 11, 2020, Deputies were in search of 26-year-old, Michael Joseph Culbertson. Culbertson had multiple active warrants such as resisting arrest, failure to stop for blue lights, interfering with police and reckless driving, which all occurred the month prior.
During the attempted arrest, seven Deputies exited an un-marked van, where they then began commanding Culbertson to put his hands up. Within seconds of them making commands, Culbertson began running. Already carrying a cellphone in his left hand, Deputies noticed Culbertson was reaching for his right side pocket. As he did, Deputies noticed Culbertson retrieved a firearm, where they then began firing numerous shots, further subduing Culbertson.
Life saving measures were provided to Culbertson, however he was later pronounced deceased. Statements from Culbertson's family were not surprising. He had mentioned numerous times "he was not going to jail". Of the seven responding Deputies, only five of them had fired their service weapons during this critical incident.
