Body worn camera footage released by the Houston Police Department shows a controversial officer involved shooting involving a suspect who is fighting a police officer after being pulled over for being inside of a stolen vehicle.
On April 11, 2023, Houston Police Officer K. Cummins conducted a stop on a vehicle that was reported as stolen. He then approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver, 42-year-old Jamarr Van-Trell Thompson. A brief altercation occurred in which Thompson attempted to flee the scene following the arrival of his friend Donneka Abraham. During the altercation, Cummins lost control of his Taser, and Abraham recovered it.
While she attempted to give Cummins the Taser back during the altercation, Cummins made the decision to engage Thompson with his service pistol to stop the threat.
Responding officers attempted to provide life-saving aid to Thompson at the scene of the incident until he was transported to a nearby medical facility and declared as deceased.
