(NSFW) Controversial- Cop Shoots Pregnant Shoplifter

This compilation of police bodycam footage records an incident wherein two officers attempt to arrest a pregnant shoplifter. Refusing to exit her vehicle, she accelerates while an officer is in front of it, which prompts him to shoot and kill her. Viewer discretion is advised.

Footage begins with an officer using a kit to try to open the door of a locked car. While this is occuring, a nearby store employee points out a shoplifting suspect to his partner officer, claiming she has stolen alcohol. She is identified as 21 year old, pregnant, Ta'Kiya Young, attempting to flee in her black sedan. His partner orders her out of the car at 0:25.

At 0:31, the camera officer crosses in front of the running vehicle, apparently in an attempt to keep her from fleeing. He draws his weapon at 0:35. She begins to accelerate into the officer at 0:38, and he fires approximately a second later. A scream is audible as she loses control of the vehicle, which is still in motion. It rolls into the shop's outer wall. Because the door is still locked, the officer breaks the window with a rescue tool at 0:59.

At 01:02, footage transitions to the parner officer. We see Young entering her vehicle at 01:09. A store worker in a yellow shirt points her out as a suspect at 01:14. The officer repeatedly orders her out of the car. At 01:50, the footage reverts to a slowed version of the shoot from the first officer's perspective, then shows the second officer's.

Both the suspect and her unborn child were pronounced dead at an area hospital.

I try to stay away from editorializing and keep to the facts, but I'm going to level with you- this is a rough one. I'm more inclined than a lot of people to give officers the benefit of the doubt, and I offer what insight I can to explain officers' actions, but it's difficult for me to justify this one. I can understand trying to keep the suspect from leaving, but at the end of the day, it's shoplifting. Having his gun out and standing directly in front of the car precluded other options, when being hit by the car at that speed was not lethal- as evidenced by the fact that she hit him. Again, shoplifting. Taking her plate number down and finding her later would have been preferable to this outcome.
